Short visit of the MCH-team to Ghana

In April 2011 a short mission from the MCH-team to Ghana was planned. The reason for this visit was the fact that the Public Records and Archives Administation Department (PRAAD, the national archives of Ghana in Accra) was unfortunately unable to attend the previous two MCH-meetings. Therefore it was vital to discuss cooperation with Ghana during this visit.

Few documents on Dutch presence in Ghana

In Ghana people are still unaware of the former Dutch presence. This is largely due to the absence of documents in Ghana. Next to that the sources are in old Dutch language. The MCH-website (under construction at present) will offer a first step towards creating accessibility to relevant documents.

Exhibition on Dutch-Ghanaian relations

A possibility for creating awareness on the mutual history is an exhibition on Dutch-Ghanaian historical and current relations. This idea has already been put forward by PRAAD during the previous visit of the MCH team. This time we took the opportunity to identify partners and further develop the strategy. The opening of the exhibition will be part of an event to celebrate the new status of the West India Company Archives as UNESCO Memory of the World. The Ghana Monuments and Museum Board (GMMB) has offered to use Elmina Castle as a stage.

Strengthening the cultural ties between Ghana and the Netherlands

Next to the GMMB we spoke to the Ministry of Tourism, the UNESCO regional Office, the University of Ghana in Legon and the Dutch Embassy. These meetings were very fruitful and we hope to secure our relations with all of these institutions in the future. Since the end of the MCH-program is getting nearer, it is important to strengthen the ties in the field of cultural cooperation between Ghana and the Netherlands. For this reason, on the last day of the visit, a Working Program for the remainder of the MCH-program was signed by PRAAD and the Nationaal Archief.

The Nationaal Archief would like to take this opportunity to thank PRAAD for hosting our visit.
