Further research cultural heritage Ghana

In 2007 the Dutch Nationaal Archief published the book: Sources for the Mutual History of Ghana and the Netherlands. An annotated guide to the Dutch archives relating to Ghana and West Africa in the Nationaal Archief, 1593-1960s (Brill, Michel Doortmont en Jinna Smit). The national archives of Ghana, PRAAD, now have requested a sequel to this ‘Ghana guide’; a database giving access to archives on the history of Ghana.

Records outside the Natonaal Archief

While the ‘Ghana guide’ contains information solely on Ghana records stored in the Nationaal Archief, the new database is an overview of Ghana related material kept in other Dutch archival institutions. The Zeeuws Archief for instance preserves the archive of the Middelburgsche Commercie Compagnie, a chartered company that was mainly active in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The Gemeentearchief Rotterdam, with many different records of Rotterdam shipping companies, also holds a lot of relevant material about the history of Ghana.

Research

The research was done by Erik Rovers, student naval history at Leiden University. He was coached by Prof. Henk den Heijer. At the moment  the results are being processed in a database sequel to the Ghana Guide. In due time the results will published on gahetNA, a website of the Fellowship of the Nationaal Archief.
