Atlantic World and the Dutch (AWAD) was initiated in 2004 by the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV). The aim of AWAD is to promote the study and preservation of the mutual cultural heritage that developed from the contact between the Dutch and the peoples of Africa and North and South America.
The identification of relevant documents in the archives of the countries concerned is an important part of this. Another element concerns the identification of current and future projects that study the tangible and intangible heritage of the Dutch presence overseas. A database has been created to bring all the relevant projects together. The Nationaal Archief will work with the Netherlands Institute for Heritage and KITLV to ensure the continuation of AWAD.
